Divided City – the Wall / Berlin – a once divided city (1961-1989)
Many Berlin visitors are no more able to call themselves back in mind the former course of the Wall; therefore they pose questions like: "Where used to be the Wall?" Even the capital's inhabitants are not always able to give them a clear answer. The Wall used to divide either the city, families and friends from each other almost 30 years long. There are places reminding us of this inhuman building. At the former checkpoint Friedrichstra§e train station, in front of "Tear's Palace" East- and West-Berliners had to say farewell to each other for an uncertain time. A part of the Invalids' Cemetery suddenly became part of the "Death Zone" (security area along the borderline) and was forgotten for a long time time. Bernauer Stra§e became the scene of dramatic events and is nowadays a site of commemoration.
